Statement on Car Break-ins

As a community, we must come together to address the troubling rise in car break-ins and thefts that disrupt our sense of safety and impose financial burdens on our residents. Ensuring there is accountability for these actions is essential- and we must also acknowledge that many of the young individuals involved in these incidents come from challenging backgrounds, often lacking stable support systems. With parents working multiple jobs or struggling with mental health and substance use, youth go unsupervised which can lead to poor decision making.

To address this issue effectively, we must look beyond punitive measures and invest in preventive strategies to steer these young people away from criminal activities and empower them to make positive choices that benefit themselves and the community.

In the coming days, I will be announcing a plan to prevent car break-ins and thefts that does not solely rely on law enforcement, that balances accountability with compassion and proactive support.
